Wisconsin author’s middle grade novel appearing at Wakandacon/
Five-state book tour underway in mid-August
July 27, 2018–Glendale, Wis.–Wisconsin author Lora Hyler introduces Wakandacon convention goers to her middle grade novel, The Stupendous Adventures of Mighty Marty Hayes featuring a 12-year-old African-American superhero and a multicultural cast of friends, who work on CRISPR-Cas9 in their 7th grade advanced science classroom, and share a love of spy gadgets.
Wakandacon will be held August 3-5 2018 in downtown Chicago at the Hilton, 720 South Michigan Ave. The Stupendous Adventures of Mighty Marty Hayes will be for sale in the Marketplace all three days. Following this, in mid-August, Hyler will undertake a five-state book tour in WI, Ill, IND, MI and Ohio. Booksellers who are interested, should contact Lora Hyler.
Mighty Marty Hayes has been compared to Black Panther meets Harry Potter. “It’s only fitting that I spotlight my book to kids and adults alike at Wakandacon. I was immediately attracted to the idea of a Midwestern festival based on Black Panther and the hugely-popular technology based, fictional African nation of Wakanda,” said author Lora Hyler. “I also share their idea of a ‘free space’ event featuring the principles of creativity, technology, education, outreach, Afro-futurism, prosperity, and feminism.”
Mighty Marty Hayes has captured the imagination of kids and young people from all cultural backgrounds who enjoy the theme of superheroes, science and spy gadgets, with a sprinkling of American History.
Advance Reviews:
“Middle grade readers who pick up The Stupendous Adventures of Mighty Marty Hayes expecting a one-dimensional story of a young would-be scientist/superhero will find the read exciting, stimulating, and a powerful probe of heroism’s roots and friendship’s special challenges; highly recommended as a standout tale.”
– D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
“An African-American tween uses espionage skills and superpowers in this debut middle-grade novel. Seventh-grader Marty Hayes is excited to work with the world-renowned CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing kit in science class. But things go awry…This rousing book with engaging characters should appeal to readers who enjoy adventurous superhero sagas. A thrilling tale with series potential that highlights science, spying, history, and the importance of family.
– Kirkus Review
“It’s a fast-paced adventure about kids who have a love for science, a fascination for all things spy related, and are just realizing that they have inherited some special talents. Smartly written, not only with the inclusion of science, the book also delights with a diverse cast of characters and well-placed references to civil rights’ history and more. This could be an excellent jumping off point for some nonfiction reading about Harriet Tubman, the Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ruby Bridges. I highly recommend this read.”
– Valerie Biel, author of Circle of Nine series, Lost Lake Press
The Stupendous Adventures of Mighty Marty Hayes was pitched to foreign publishers at the March 2018 Bologna Children’s Book Fair from March 26-29 in Italy. Foreign publishers are being sought.
Hyler has a publishing contract with HenschelHAUS Publishing, Inc. for the three-part series in English.
