The Great American Read is a nationwide Public Broadcasting System (PBS) initiative exploring and celebrating the power of reading, through the prism of 100 best-loved books, according to the website.
The 100 books were selected through a national survey. About 7,200 people participated. The series is designed to get people reading!
Meredith Vieira, 14-time Emmy winner, former host of The Today Show and The View. serves as host of the upcoming eight-part series.
Milwaukee’s PBS stations are participating. Watch PBS on May 22nd at 7 p.m. for the first of several broadcasts.
I participated in last night’s kick-off event at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s C Auditorium. The program trailer spotlighted many well-known figures and their favorite books. Luminaries included Neil deGrasse Tyson (who gets a shout-out in my new middle-grade novel!), Venus Williams, James Patterson, and many more. I enjoyed chatting with book lovers about my novel. Julie Hill Lehr, Milwaukee PBS’ manager of marketing and community engagement invited Wisconsin authors to join in. Thanks for inviting me, Julie!
Book lovers unite and get behind this great effort to get the country reading!
